Jules Verne (1828–1905) was a French writer and a pioneer of early science fiction, celebrated for his thrilling adventures and imaginative use of science and technology. After that journey Verne mad a promise to his father that from then on he would travel only in his imagination. Verne kept that promise, creating remarkable journeys that carried readers around the world and beyond. Among his most famous novels is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), which follows Professor Aronnax on a mysterious voyage beneath the oceans aboard the submarine Nautilus, commanded by the enigmatic Captain Nemo.
