The Northern Cardinal, a vibrant splash of crimson against any backdrop, is one of North America's most recognizable songbirds. Early settlers in North America were astonished by their brilliant color and named them after the high-ranking officials in the Catholic Church, known for their distinctive red vestments. Like flamingoes, the cardinal’s red color comes from carotenoids in what they eat including berries and seeds. Mrs. Cardinal is a bit more muted in color, but she still sports a bright coral beak to go with her low-key beige plumage. Beyond their visual appeal, cardinals are known for their cheerful, often loud songs, which can be heard year-round. Frequent visitors to bird feeders, these brilliant birds symbolize joy, hope, and for some, a spiritual connection.
