Mary Vaux Walcott (1860-1940) was born in Philadelphia, PA. When she was eight years old, she received a watercolor paint set and started painting flowers. Growing up she and her brothers would spend summers in the Canadian Rockies. There she loved hiking, observing and painting local flowers that she discovered. She would eventually spend more than 40 years there and has created hundreds of botanical studies of flora. Later in 1925, the Smithsonian would publish a five-volume set of over 400 of Walcott's paintings in the North American Wild Flowers collection. Her artwork was admired for being incredibly detailed with vivid colors and accuracy.
