Owen Jones ( 1809-1874) was a modern designer from London who was interested in design motifs, color and architecture. Inspired by his travels around the world, his visit to the Alhambra Palace in Spain caught his attention and was a turning point in his life and career. He and his friend, Jules Goury, were delighted in the bold colors and geometric loops of the tile designs inside the palace and they dedicated many months to draw most of them. During his lifetime, Jones drew inspiration from the ancient world and published his drawings in the design book, "The Grammar of Ornament" which is still in print today. Another publication, "The Grammar of Chinese Ornament", contains drawings like the floral design featured on this lantern.
