Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) created over 2100 works including 860 oil paintings, remarkably within a decade. In 1889, he admitted himself into an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France. There van Gogh began painting Irises, a piece defined by blue flowers, orange marigolds, green leaves and red soil. When complete, he sent it to his brother Theo, who submitted it for the 1889 Salon des Independents exhibition in Paris.
