Seascape Orb

Get lost while you look at this amazing glass orb paperweight. Inspired by the ever changing seascape and aquatic rhythms of the ocean, there are different details that come into focus each time it is looked at. The gentle fluidity that is present in this glass piece is absolutely mesmerizing.

Created entirely by glass artist Scott Garrelts of Garrelts Glass. In his glass studio in Kansas, he starts off by creating many of his colored glass from raw materials. "By creating my own colors I'm able to come up with some colors that may not be available to the rest of the glass world." After creating his glass, Garrelts starts a unique dance of sorts. First, the murrini and latticinio canes are made. Next, these canes and murrini are then preheated to over 1000° before being applied to the main body of the piece. Dichroic glass adds a bit of a glitter effect and the small bubble texture in the clear glass is reminiscent of sea bubbles. Once these elements are applied and melted in, more layers of clear glass are used to encase the colors over the blue background. After the layers are on, Garrelts shapes the piece using the same kinds of wooden paddles and metal tools that Roman artists first used, connecting this artist and his work to an ancient historical tradition.
